FROM TEA SLOPES TO TENEMENTS is Bruce's latest choral work commissioned by the Glasgow Chamber Choir for its COMMONWEALTH CHORAL MARATHON in June 2014. Five composers were commissioned to produce a song which reflected a link between Glasgow and the Commonwealth to celebrate the 2014 Games and the 20th Anniversary of the Choir. Since Bruce was born in India, this was a starting point referring to the tea trade leading to versions of street songs. The five pop up concerts meant that there could be no keyboard accompaniment, so Bruce used Flute and Penny Whistle to create atmospheric accompaniment, provided by daughter Lynn who also sings in the choir. The songs will be collected into a new GLASGOW SONG BOOK.
FROM SEA TO SKY was commissioned by Kirkcaldy Old Kirk Trust and premiered on 22nd March 2014. It is based on historical events in the church's life including the Wode Psalter, the Kirk Session minutes of the trial of the witch, Alison Dick and her execution, the fact that Adam Smith was baptised and went to church there and the modern immigrant society in krkcaldy, who are mainly Polish. The frst performance was given by bel canto Voices with Christopher Nairne, baritone, Andrew Lees, Violin, Susan Gormley, Paino and Sophie Askew, Harp, conducted by the composer.
THE QUEEN'S WAKE is a new work written for Cupar Choral Society premiered on 7th December 2013. The work is now available for general sale/hire through Lomond Music, Scottish Music Information Centre and Amazon. It is based on James Hoggs's massive poem of the same name, which as been reduced to five songs with Piano, Violin and Clarsach accompaniment. There is also an optional part for childrens choir.
